Rev. W. says (beginning at 7:48 in the video) that when the Ten Commandments were given at Mount Sinai, “The people heard the LORD speaking these things and they were absolutely terrified and rightly so, because this standard that God gives is so high that we can’t keep it.”
If I understand the story in Exodus correctly, that is not how the people at Mount Sinai comprehended God’s commandments. The people did not even hear anything intelligible when God spoke his commandments to Moses. They were terrified of the power evidently conveyed in God’s thunderous voice. (Exodus 20:18-19) Then Moses comforted them with the knowledge that God’s purpose was not to destroy his people but to sanctify them. (Exodus 20:20) And later, when Moses relayed to them precisely what God had said, the people confidently committed themselves to obey all of God’s commands. (Exodus 24:3)
