A Simple Order of Prayer for Couples

This simple order of prayer is intended for couples, married, engaged, dating, at the end of the day. Adam is the man; Eve is the woman. As head of house, the Adam parts are required, the Eve parts are optional.

Begin with conversation.

Adam asks Eve: What are you thankful for from today? What are you worried or anxious about? **

Eve may ask Adam: What are you thankful for from today? What are you worried or anxious about?

Adam prays for Eve.

First: O Lord, we thank You for… here pray for all the thankful things.

Then: Please help us with… here pray for all the worries and anxieties.

Eve may pray the same for Adam.

Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed by Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pray together Luther’s Evening Prayer

We thank You, our heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept us this day; and we pray that You would forgive us all our sins where we have done wrong, and graciously keep us this night. For into Your hands we commend ourselves, our bodies and souls, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with us, that the evil foe may have no power over us. Amen.

Then Adam prays for Eve:

O Lord, bless my precious [wife/fiancée/etc. NAME] and keep her, make Your face shine on her and be gracious to her, lift up your countenance upon her, and give her peace. Amen.

Eve may pray for Adam:

O Lord, bless my precious [husband/fiancée/etc. NAME] and keep him, make Your face shine on him and be gracious to him, lift up your countenance upon him, and give him peace. Amen.

For the beginning of the day, the following adjustments are made.

Adam to Eve: What are your plans today?

He then prays for the Lord to bless those plans.

After the Lord’s Prayer, Luther’s Morning Prayer is prayed.

We thank You, our heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept us this night from all harm and danger; and we pray that You would keep us this day also from sin and every evil, that all our doings and life may please You. For into Your hands we commend ourselves, our bodies and souls, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with us, that the evil foe may have no power over us. Amen.
